Letter to the Editor: Thanks for great care

From the DANVILLE COMMERCIAL NEWS
June 21, 2011

On June 1, I awoke from my afternoon nap to find my mother, Marjorie Egger, at my door with an odd look on her face.

My Mom, ever-reluctant to visit her own family doctor, herself, said to me, “I think I need to go to the hospital.” And she walked away into the other room.

My jaw dropped. I didn’t ask, I didn’t question, I didn’t pause. I jumped out of bed, got dressed as fast as I could, and rushed into the other room praying I wouldn’t find her lying on the floor unconscious.

She was sitting on the couch gasping for breath holding one side. She asked me to call 911, which I did. We ended up in the emergency room at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center from 5:30 to 8 p.m. when she was admitted to Provena’s intensive care unit.

She was at Provena a total of eight days with a serious case of pneumonia. Doctors told us later the EMT call — and their quick response — very likely saved Mom’s life. The professionalism, efficiency and compassion that we saw and experienced there that day — and that I have experienced there many times before that — will stay with me forever. And, I expect, with my Mom, too.

She is home recovering now, getting stronger every day, due largely to the efforts of these wonderful people, who have already sent her a “Get Well” card — which everyone working on her floor signed.

I have heard it said you cannot get good medical care in Danville. Well, we certainly got it here June 1!
